Investing in Young People

Since our launch in 2010 Islington Giving has been committed to investing in Islington’s young residents by opening venues and testing new ways of giving young people opportunities. In 2015 Islington Giving commissioned a consultation with Islington’s young people.  The findings and recommendations from this research entitled Making the Most of Free Time are shaping our young people programme for the future. Read on to find out more. Through our work we are aiming to support young people to:

  • develop high levels of confidence and self esteem

  • be resilient and able to cope with setbacks

  • establish, and maintain, positive relationships with others

  • feel a sense of agency and understand how to ‘move on’ in their lives to achieve their aspirations

  • be enterprising and demonstrate an openness to new ideas and experiences

Our current programmes are:

  • Friday Night Out – in partnership with Arsenal in the Community we support projects for young people in the north and south of the borough with sessions of football coaching alongside activities such as cooking and arts and crafts.

  • Mentoring Works – this programme, launched in September 2014, is delivered by the BIG Alliance. It brings young people into businesses so that they can begin to experience the world of work.

  • Young Catalyst – this is our latest initiative, launched summer 2016. Young Catalyst provides small grants to individual disadvantaged young people to enable them to access and engage in activities they feel will make a difference to their lives and help fulfil personal goals.
